Relay for Life Alameda Was A Huge Success

The annual cancer research fundraiser, Relay for Life Alameda, was held on Saturday July 20th, at Leydecker Park.  The day- and night-long event featured multiple commemorations of cancer survivors, patients, victims and caretakers.  All proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society (ACS).  Alameda Relay for Life is one of the  longest serving relays in California.

Relay for Life has been held at various venues in Alameda.  Visitors to Leydecker Park this year were encouraged to join in the walk, pledge donations, and purchase luminaria to light up the night.  This year’s theme was Island Dreams, represented by hourly events:  from Aloha to Karaoke to Voice of Hope.  The Alameda team emphasized the danger of skin cancers and provided educational materials, sunscreen and lip protection for distribution.  As the relay concluded, hand-crafted luminaria, marked with the names of loved ones, lined the walking path.  Alameda Red Cross youth and Alameda/Encinal Key Club youth helped during the event.
